FAQs
November to April is the best time. Kaziranga National Park is open for safaris only from about November to April and stays closed in the monsoon, roughly May to October. Tawang is pleasant from March to June and October to November; December to February brings snow at Sela Pass and Bum La, which can close the roads.
Yes. Indian citizens need an Inner Line Permit (ILP) to enter Arunachal Pradesh, which can be applied for online at eilp.arunachal.gov.in. Bum La Pass needs a separate permit from the DC Office in Tawang with Army clearance, issued offline after you reach Tawang. Foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit and are generally not allowed to visit Bum La.
7 nights and 8 days is ideal: 2 nights in Kaziranga, 1 night in Dirang, 3 nights in Tawang and 1 night in Bomdila. The long mountain drives (5 to 8.5 hours) and the high altitude make a shorter trip tiring.
Sela Pass is at 13,700 ft and Bum La Pass at 15,200 ft, so mild altitude symptoms are possible. The itinerary acclimatises gradually via Dirang before Tawang. Drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol, carry warm clothes and consult your doctor beforehand if you have heart or breathing conditions.
Yes. Kaziranga is home to about two-thirds of the world's Greater One-Horned Rhinoceros, and sightings on a jeep or elephant safari are very common. You may also see wild water buffalo, swamp deer, elephants and many birds.
